Because of a Jack Ruby bullet, Lee Harvey Oswald never had his day in court. The gavel has nevertheless come down on Mr. Oswald’s account many times since his death – if only at memorabilia auctions.
Be it Mr. Ruby’s Colt Cobra pistol or the cadaver tag placed around Mr. Oswald’s toe, ephemera associated with the assassination are not uncommon sights on the auction dais. The latest, conducted by RM Auctions on Saturday in Cresson, Tex., saw a 1962 Checker Marathon Taxicab from the defunct Pate Museum of Transportation, in nearby Fort Worth, sell for $35,750.
The Checker is believed to be the car in which Mr. Oswald briefly rode while making his getaway following the shooting of President Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.
The Pate, closed by family members last year, received the taxi in 1979 when the Checker Motors Corporation donated it to the permanent collection.
The vehicle will remain on public view at its new home, Historic Auto Attractions of Roscoe, Ill., a sprawling showcase of automotive arcana 90 miles northwest of Chicago and owned by Wayne Lensing.
Mr. Lensing is a former ASA late-model racer and the proprietor of Lefthander Chassis, a short-track racing supply company with its own Midwest circuit team. He is also an insatiable collector.
